Custom Recirculating Living Wall with Handcrafted Wooden Frame and Hidden Tank

Florafelt Pocket Panel custom recirculating living wall by Bruce Spencer.

An ingenious living wall installation

Homeowner and handyman Bruce Spencer created a custom recirculating living wall for his home entrance using a Florafelt 12-Pocket Panel with a wood frame. He shares his secrets below.

Bruce describes how he did it

Our garage is on the other side of the stucco wall entrance. The plastic water tank is under my garage workbench behind a cabinet door.

The wire for the electrical timer connects to the pump in the tank. The return water tube is also visible at the left top corner of the tank.

The irrigation line hangs at the top right. The drain tray was fabricated by cutting an aluminum pipe in half lengthwise with a bandsaw.

Two eye bolts hold the vertical garden firmly to the wall.

Rainwater Sourced Koi Pond Irrigates and Nourishes a Custom Crafted Atrium Fern Wall

Harvested rainwater creates a living oasis for a Southern California water conscious home.

The living wall integrates with the water catchment system

“Thanks Plants On Walls for all your help. Love your Florafelt product. Our Florafelt Pockets living wall is filling in nicely. Building this atrium was my retirement project and took a year to complete. All of the plants are irrigated with collected rain water and fed using Koi pond water. The off-grid water system makes this ideal project for Southern California.”

A Vertical Garden That’s Fun for Kids

By a sunny, inside window or on your patio, you and your kids can explore a whole new way to garden. Pick out the coolest plants, wrap them up and put them in the pockets. Bundle an exciting bunch in the same pocket and throw in some seeds. You can even use cuttings or other plants in the yard. Try anything and have fun.

Root Wraps Make it Easy

Wrap each plant neatly and slip into the soft felt pockets. Kids love to learn about plants and watch the roots grow into the felt. It’s a hands-on way to understand gardening, and glimpse the future of growing food. With a little practice, your family will become plant wall masters.

Plants Love Automatic Watering

Your Florafelt vertical garden waters automatically with a pump and timer. Just top off the tank every now and then, and the pump waters your vertical garden from the top. The excess drains into the tank and recirculates for sustainable gardening. Custom loose fibers let the roots breathe for easy growth, and it’s fun to watch the roots dig into the felt. A timer activates the pump each day for 30 minutes, so you’ll never forget to water. Plants love it, too.

Use different combinations and change it up when you learn what thrives in your lighting and environment. At the end of season, remove the plants, shake out the wraps and store for next year. It’s a fun family project.

Hanging tabs let you mount Florafelt Pocket Panels anywhere.

Simply Hang and Grow

The Florafelt Compact Vertical Garden Kit is affordable and fun and can be used over and over. Unfold the panel and hang from the included mounting hooks. Fill the tank with water then plug in the timer. Use the provided felt squares to wrap your plants, stretch open the pockets and insert into your plants.
