Florafelt Pockets Restore Living Columns at the Perez Art Museum Miami

The Perez Art Museum (PAMM) in Miami needed a solution for dripping and maintenance issues at their famous living columns created by Patric Blanc, and Brightview Landscaping Miami turned to Florafelt Pockets.

With only the first column planted, the artistic vision was instantly revitalized. Because changing plants is as easy as slipping them out of their pockets, the column will be monitored and adjusted to create a landscape design for all the rest. One glance reveals the future beauty.

Florafelt Flex Pockets

Inspired by this project we developed a flexible planting pocket solution that can be used on extremely curved surfaces. We now offer this new living wall solution that can be applied to any surface to be planted.

Sansevieria Bedroom Vertical Garden

Sansevieria is often called the Bedroom Plant. It’s one of the few plants that are active at night, converting CO2 to oxygen.

Florafelt Recirc 33-Pocket Units planted with Sansevieria with LED lighting.
Florafelt Recirc 33-Pocket Units planted with Sansevieria with LED lighting.

This vertical garden was created with two Florafelt Recirc-33, for a total of 66 plants. To allow for better drainage and help prevent overwatering in the interior location, the soil was enriched with bark inside each root wrapper. Since the room has little light, high power LED spot bulbs nourish the wall in daytime hours, and pumps run for 30 minutes per day. The wall started as small plants that filled in over the past year without fertilizer, and they’re still growing. Look closely and you’ll see maidenhair ferns that joined the wall on their own.

A Vertical Garden That’s Fun for Kids

By a sunny, inside window or on your patio, you and your kids can explore a whole new way to garden. Pick out the coolest plants, wrap them up and put them in the pockets. Bundle an exciting bunch in the same pocket and throw in some seeds. You can even use cuttings or other plants in the yard. Try anything and have fun.

Root Wraps Make it Easy

Wrap each plant neatly and slip into the soft felt pockets. Kids love to learn about plants and watch the roots grow into the felt. It’s a hands-on way to understand gardening, and glimpse the future of growing food. With a little practice, your family will become plant wall masters.

Pick your favorite plants, wrap the roots, then slip them into the pockets.

Plants Love Automatic Watering

Your Florafelt vertical garden waters automatically with a pump and timer. Just top off the tank every now and then, and the pump waters your vertical garden from the top. The excess drains into the tank and recirculates for sustainable gardening. Custom loose fibers let the roots breathe for easy growth, and it’s fun to watch the roots dig into the felt. A timer activates the pump each day for 30 minutes, so you’ll never forget to water. Plants love it, too.

A Fun Family Project

A happy plant bursts with beautiful colors, and your family will be rewarded with a vibrant, flowering display. Any plant can grow in Florafelt Pockets, so try something new. Use different combinations and change it up when you learn what thrives in your lighting and environment. At the end of season, remove the plants, shake out the wraps and store for next year. It’s a fun family project.

Living Walls Absorb Noise, Outperform Most Materials

Living walls soothe our hectic lives. They not only look beautiful, clean the air, cool buildings, and support bio-diversity, a recent study from Spain proves how they absorb the harsh effects of urban noise and provide an individual oasis of calm.

A study by Spain’s Department of Thermal Engineering at the University of the Basque Country measured the sound absorption of living walls over a range of frequencies in an acoustic test chamber.

The study by Applied Acoustics concluded that :

  • Green walls provide a weighted sound reduction index of 15 db.
  • Green Walls gave a measure a sound absorption coefficient of 0.40.
  • Green wall have significant potential for sound insulation for vegetal architecture.

Vertical Gardens Make Us Happy

A wall of plants is more than a beautiful home feature. It’s an entire community of living things. Together they have a life of their own and create a distinct personality. The leaves grow and move every day, creating a subtle but distinct change. It’a living ecosystem that’s complex and rich, and that’s why they draw our attention.

The deep green of the living wall with burlwood table and lighting created with seed pods enhance the organic feel to this space.

Getting to Know Your Vertical Garden

Touching your plants lets you know your living wall better. You can feel the raw power of life in each leaf. Interacting with plants reminds of the miracle of living things. Getting to know your living wall will also make the plants healthier and happier. For example, wiping leaves removes dust so they can breath easier. The surface of leaves absorb carbon dioxide from our breath and converts it to oxygen, which helps us breathe easier too.

Like a window into a forest, this living wall melts into the design of this architectural home.

Plants Give Back

Plants bring huge joy. We love potted plants in our homes and offices, but it’s magnified with an entire wall. We spend most of our time indoors, so a vertical garden is a reminder of how important nature is for our well-being. It feels like an open window and lets us experience nature every day.

Philodendron Congo Green loves bright light, and pairs nicely with Philodendron Xanadu Neon to provide striking color contrast.

Inspiring Green Design

This living wall is designed by the architect and owners of this Noe Valley San Francisco home. With their construction team, they created a waterproof alcove with floor drains. An inset plywood surface was waterproofed with rubber pond liner, and Florafelt Pocket Panels were mounted using deck screws. Irrigation tubing was added at the top, and water slowly drips to each plant. Full-spectrum LED lighting provides perfect light levels. A mix of philodendrons and others are were added to create dramatic green sweeps with subtle textures. Over the years, the plants were rearranged, and new species introduced. The Florafelt Pockets and Wraps system makes it easy to sculpt this well-loved living wall.

Florafelt Pockets Make it Easy

Affordable and elegantly designed synthetic felt pockets are mounted easily to walls. Once irrigation and drainage is in place they are quickly planted to provide you with an instant living experience.
