Add Orchids to Your Living Wall

Orchid roots add organic interest

Orchids are added to the vibrantly colorful living wall at Young Dental in San Francisco. This wildly complex design has evolved using orchids and bromeliads along with philodendron cordatum. This custom recirculating system is made with Florafelt Grow Strip woven into a narrow 6-in grid. This allows for more complexity in the design and the use of smaller plant materials.

Orchids are simply pinned to the surface

Note how the orchids are added to the surface of the felt so the roots will only receive they’re preferred place of being close to a humid condition. First remove all the bark that normally comes with orchids. Then choose a location on the living wall where the roots can hang down to add a natural organic look. The orchid’s roots are held in place using support sticks that typically supplied with the plants. You can also use wire, pins or other creative means to support your orchids to the Florafelt material.

A long lifecycle hosting carbon absorbing plants

Because the panels are extremely lightweight and efficient a reverse carbon impact is possible from its lifecycle of hosting living plants. Living plants absorb carbon in the air through photosynthesis which offset the CO2 produced in manufacture. This in turn reduces global warming effects.

Energy savings by increasing a buildings efficiency

Further carbon emissions are reduced by creating energy savings in buildings. In designing a Green Infrastructure west facing walls are covered with plants that create a cooling effect within the building. As plant material grows and regenerates itself the surface of a building is protected from sunlight deterioration. Together the living wall reduces cooling costs and extends the life of building materials, which saves money.

Filters indoor air, promotes health

Interior use has enormous health benefits because interior air is filtered and renewed with oxygen from the large number of living plants that thrive in a living wall. A NASA Study extensively has researched the use of house plants indoors.

Reduce water usage in agriculture
