Orchid roots add organic interest
Orchids are added to the vibrantly colorful living wall at Young Dental in San Francisco. This wildly complex design has evolved using orchids and bromeliads along with philodendron cordatum. This custom recirculating system is made with Florafelt Grow Strip woven into a narrow 6-in grid. This allows for more complexity in the design and the use of smaller plant materials.
Orchids are simply pinned to the surface
Note how the orchids are added to the surface of the felt so the roots will only receive they’re preferred place of being close to a humid condition. First remove all the bark that normally comes with orchids. Then choose a location on the living wall where the roots can hang down to add a natural organic look. The orchid’s roots are held in place using support sticks that typically supplied with the plants. You can also use wire, pins or other creative means to support your orchids to the Florafelt material.

Plants promote healthy living
Vibrant plants are universally recognized as a symbol of robust living. The beautiful new Tanner Health Systems building in Carrollton, Georgia features plants as an effortless, natural way to promote healthy lifestyles. The Florafelt living green wall is a bold statement of strength and optimism.
Local interior landscape team designed the planters and living wall with native greenery. Natural design was a key component to emphasize the healing atmosphere. The living wall is a prominent feature of the main space, an exciting and unexpected element that makes a bold statement about the benefits of the natural world.
Local Interior plantscapers will maintain and nurture the greenery throughout the interior, including the living wall. Based on a design that offers natural colors and a variety of textures, the living wall is a seamless complement to the artful planters arrayed in multiple locations.
Installed in a single day by the Atlanta team of Plants on Walls, the custom design called for a recirculating tank and supplemental lighting. It will grow into a fully unique micro-landscape that will marvel visitors for years to come.
Biophilic designer takes root
Jake Owens, owner of Thriveroots, a Biophilic design company in Fayetteville, Arkansas, installed a living sign made entirely of plants. Our goal is to bring the beneficial experience of nature into the modern built environment of today’s society, says Jake.
A thriving arts community comes together
The living sign project was funded by Runway Group and is located right on Walton Blvd in Bentonville at The Source AR. It is made up of 240 native perennials, grasses and sedges set up on a drip irrigation and is a pollinator’s Heaven!! Drive by and check it out if you’re in the area. It will be an ever-changing and constantly evolving living wall, changing colors with the seasons!! Mural in the background by Graham Edwards Art.
Thanks to everyone involved
“Words can’t express how excited and thankful I am to complete the first official project as a business owner and “local plant artist”!! And what a doozie of a project it has been!! For quite some time I was unhappy with life, work, finances and other things, and it took me the better part of 3 years to finally make the decision to leave the career I had worked so hard to obtain and had been with for 8 years…but it has hands down been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Venturing into the unknown can sometimes be a difficult decision, especially when you encounter a global pandemic the 1st month into entrepreneurship, but my gosh I’ve had so much incredible support from friends and loved ones, and I thank you all so much for that and helping this come to fruition. This project has been fun, stressful, and just a constant string of emotions, but with a little help from my friends…it is complete!! Special thanks to Nathan Crouch, Derek Hillyer, Jeff Starling for helping make dreams come true and to Dove Nicole and Lynne Cooper for their constant support…I couldn’t have done it without you all! Don’t ever let anyone tell you not to chase your dreams or that what you want to do is silly or “not lucrative”. If there’s something calling you…follow that calling, even if it is faint. DO WHAT YOU LOVE!!”Jake Owens, Thriveroots
An ingenious living wall installation
Homeowner and handyman Bruce Spencer created a custom recirculating living wall for his home entrance using a Florafelt 12-Pocket Panel with a wood frame. He shares his secrets below.
Bruce describes how he did it
Our garage is on the other side of the stucco wall entrance. The plastic water tank is under my garage workbench behind a cabinet door.
The wire for the electrical timer connects to the pump in the tank. The return water tube is also visible at the left top corner of the tank.
The irrigation line hangs at the top right. The drain tray was fabricated by cutting an aluminum pipe in half lengthwise with a bandsaw.
Close-up of the drain tray that connects to the return line on the back of the frame.
Two eye bolts hold the vertical garden firmly to the wall.
Water return line. I made another hole a bit higher up for the irrigation line from the pump to the planter.
This photo shows both lines that irrigate and drain from the living wall.
Ready to hang and plant!
A gorgeous discovery
A living wall of exotic tropicals turns a standard basement light well into a luxurious subterranean garden that enriches a home gym and dance studio.
The owners of this Palo Alto home asked Planted Places to bring a touch of nature into an active space designed to encourage healthy living. In addition to freshening the air, the living wall is a singular expression of tropical beauty, vibrant with colors and textures. The owners were also thrilled to discover how local wildlife shared their vision of a natural shelter.
Architectural-grade Florafelt Pro System
Green wall expert and designer Christine Dunckley chose the Florafelt Pro System to transform the light well into a flourishing exotic garden. After waterproofing the walls, her team installed the Florafelt Pro System and planted the grid according to her design. Because the grids easily accommodate fully grown plants, it took a single day for the team two wrap and plant an instant tropical oasis. The Florafelt Pro System provides the ultimate solution for vertical landscape artistry, with room enough for a huge variety of leafy and flowering plants. The wall evolves as it grows, weaving a rich tapestry of colors, shapes, and textures.
The perfect place to nest
After enjoying their tropical living wall for a few months, the owners noticed two birds carefully tending one spot in particular. They made the exciting discovery they’d provided a safe haven for a local bird family! Sheltering in the foliage, this gorgeous nest of eggs is the purest illustration of a soothing, private oasis
